Banke Bihari Temple, Vrindavan

The beating heart of Vrindavan. Banke Bihari Temple is where Lord Krishna is worshipped as Bihariji — a deity so charged with love that the curtain is drawn every few minutes so his gaze never overwhelms the devotee. Here is everything you need for a smooth Banke Bihari darshan.

About

Why Banke Bihari Temple
is Vrindavan’s soul

Banke Bihari Temple was established in 1864 by Swami Haridas, the saint-musician and guru of Tansen. The presiding deity, Banke Bihariji, was discovered in the nearby Nidhivan forest and is worshipped without bells or conches — only soft devotional song, just as Swami Haridas preferred.

Unlike most temples, there is no jhula or fixed aarti spectacle at Banke Bihari. The unique “jhanki” darshan — where the curtain opens and closes every minute or two — is itself the experience. The Banke Bihari Temple Vrindavan crowd swells on weekends and festivals, so timing your visit matters.

Banke Bihari darshan

  • Dress modestly; the lanes are narrow and packed, so wear easy footwear you can remove quickly
  • Hold children’s hands tightly — the jhanki rush can be intense
