Govardhan Parikrama

Circumambulating the sacred hill that Krishna lifted on his little finger is among the most beloved acts of devotion in Braj. The Govardhan Parikrama is a 21-km path of temples, kunds and quiet faith — and you can walk it or do it comfortably by car.

About

The 21 km
Govardhan Parikrama route

The Govardhan Parikrama traces a roughly 21-km loop around Govardhan Hill (Giriraj Ji). Pilgrims traditionally start and end at Daan Ghati, walking barefoot in a clockwise direction. The full Govardhan Parikrama on foot takes 5–7 hours at a steady pace.

The path passes Daan Ghati, Kusum Sarovar, Radha Kund, Shyam Kund, Mansi Ganga and Mukharvind. Many devotees perform the more arduous “dandavati” parikrama; most pilgrims simply walk, and families with elders complete the Govardhan Parikrama by car in about 1.5–2 hours.

Practical

Walking vs
doing it by car

  • On foot: ~21 km, 5–7 hours — start before sunrise to beat the heat
  • By car: the full loop in 1.5–2 hours, stopping at the main shrines
  • Carry water, and for barefoot walking, do the Govardhan Parikrama in the cooler months
  • Ekadashi, Guru Purnima and Govardhan Puja (after Diwali) are the most auspicious — and busiest
  • Radha Kund and Kusum Sarovar are the most photogenic stops on the parikrama
